Hemp & CBD

Hemp (also known as Industrial Hemp) is a cultivar of Cannabis sativa, which is defined as a cannabis plant or plant derivative containing an amount of ∆9-tetrahydracannabidiol (THC) – less 0.3% in the United States.

History of Hemp

As one of the oldest known plants cultivated by humans, hemp predates the definition of agriculture itself. Indigenous people used hemp fiber to make cloth, and in central Eurasia hemp-seed smoke was inhaled recreationally and as part of rituals.

Hemp in US History

Prior to the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, hemp was a mainstay of agriculture in the United States. Presidents from George Washington to Zachary Taylor included hemp in their agricultural endeavors. During World War II, hemp taxes levied by the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 related to hemp were put on hold so that hemp textiles could support the war effort.

Uses of Hemp:

Hemp is grown to make a staggering number of products, including clothing, CBD products, environmentally-friendly concrete, and of course hemp smokes. These products are manufactured various parts of hemp, from the stalks to the seeds. The uses are so varied, that it’s possible to fly an airplane entirely made from and powered by hemp (apart from the engine of course)!

Hemp Cloth and Textiles

Cloth and textiles were among the oldest uses of hemp. Clothing made from hemp is both more durable and more environmentally friendly than cotton and polyester. Hemp clothing does not break down after washing, and uses less water, inorganic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides to grow. That’s less waste while growing and less clothing thrown away.

Hemp Building Materials

Hemp is now being used to make building materials such as wood and “concrete.” These materials, while not extremely popular yet, are often just as durable, and in some cases may last even longer. More importantly, while some wood is grown sustainably, most of the wood and concrete industry destroy our forests and pollute our air. Hemp can also make ropes, varnishes, plastic, and insulation.

Hemp Food

Like chia and flax seeds – hemp seeds are incredibly nutritious and serve as a prolific sources of fiber and omega fatty acids. Hemp can also be used to make vegan alternatives to protein powers, oil, and even milk and cheese!

Hemp flower is the primary ingredient of our CBD Hemp Smokes, because it contains the highest concentration of phytochemical compounds – such as terpenes, CBD, other cannabinoids, flavonoids, and others. All hemp flower used in the production of our CBD hemp smokes are federally compliant, containing <0.3% of ∆9-THC.

Biofuels

Specially filtered hemp oil can be used to power diesel engines. It can also be fermented in order to create ethanol fuels.

Legal Definition

Though the exact same species of plant, hemp and cannabis are distinguished by their THC content, with cannabis generally referring to any plant or plant materials over the federal limit of 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis.

Physical Appearance

Cannabis is generally grown for high ∆9-THC content in the flowers, and so is kept shorter and bushier, whereas hemp plants have a more sparse, taller appearance. However, recent advancements in high-CBD/CBG hemp genetics display phenotypes (the physical appearance of the plant) that more closely resemble cannabis.

Cultivation

Whereas hemp is most-often grown outdoors, cannabis can be grown either indoors or outdoors depending on region and climate. Cannabis is also commonly grown via hydroponic, aquaponic, and aeroponic methods, and hemp is most commonly grown directly in-ground.

Chemical Contents

Phytochemicals are the chemical class of compounds found in plants, including terpenes and flavonoids. Pytocannabinoids are the cannabinoids produced by plants. In Cannabis sativa, the main phytocannabinoids are ∆9-THC and CBD. However, there are over 130 phytocannabinoids found in cannabis and hemp!

The expression of these chemicals widely vary between individual hemp and cannabis cultivars. The differentiator between hemp and cannabis is the concentration of ∆9-THC.

Terpenes are the compounds found in plants that make them smell so nice! There are tens of thousands of terpenes in existence. When we talk about terpenes in hemp and cannabis, some of the most common ones are:

Limonene: responsible for citrus-y scent

Terpinolene: fruity and aromatic

Pinene: surprise – it smells of pine!

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is an extraordinary phytocannabinoid found in the Cannabis sativa plant along with THC. It is one of well over 100 phytocannabinoids found in cannabis, and interacts with our bodies’ endocannabinoid system receptors.

Pharmacology of CBD (How CBD Interacts With Your Body)

CBD interacts with our bodies’ endocannabinoid system (ESC) by way of CB1 and CB2 receptors. It is metabolized by the liver and by enzymes in the intestine when ingested.

Bioavailability of CBD

When ingested, bioavailability (absorption rate) is estimated at around 6%. However, inhaled CBD has a bioavailability of 2-10 times that, meaning smoking or inhaling the compound is a much more effective way to get CBD into your body effectively.

Ways to Consume CBD

There are tons of ways to consume CBD, some more effective than others. Topicals are meant to be applied to the skin, ingestible are meant to be swallowed, and inhalables are meant to be, well, inhaled! Inhaling CBD is widely considered to be the most effective way to consume CBD – and that includes smoking CBD-rich hemp.

CBD is non-psychoactive, so smoking or ingesting it will not produce the same mind-altering effects as ∆9-THC. However, you may feel slightly relaxed or calm. When smoking MOUNTAIN Smokes, you can expect the effects of CBD to take effect within seconds to minutes of your first puff.

Anecdotally, CBD may counteract some of the less desirable effects of ∆9-THC. So next time you had one brownie too many, having a MOUNTAIN Smoke might help you.

No. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), CBD is not associated with the potential for abuse, unlike tobacco, which is a “leading cause of death, illness and impoverishment” and is “one of the biggest public health threats the world has ever faced.”

Thanks to the passage of the 2014 and 2018 Agriculture Improvement Acts (also called the Farm Bills), CBD derived from Industrial Hemp containing less than 0.3% THC is was federally rescheduled. This allows the cultivation and use of Hemp Flower in most states (see: Do you ship to my state?).

All MOUNTAIN Smokes products are fully compliant with regulations laid out in the 2014 & 2018 Farm Bills in addition to guidance provided by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

CBD by itself will not make you “fail” a drug test (unless specifically testing for CBD). However, trace amounts of THC in legal hemp smokes have a small risk of causing you to test positive. That is why it is extremely important that you check the Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for any hemp or CBD product you consume. If you’re sensitive to THC or you’re subject to drug tests, only buy CBD products, especially hemp smokes, from reputable companies that post their COAs publicly.

The Farm Bill is a “living document” which is reviewed by Congress every few years, and addresses things like farm subsidies, research, conservation, trade, and more. The 2014 and 2018 Farm Bill are historic because of their de-scheduling of hemp, defined as Cannabis sativa plants and derivatives with less than 0.3% THC content.

Hemp Smokes

Hemp smokes (also called hemp cigarettes or CBD cigarettes), are hemp flowers rolled into a discrete and convenient format. Because hemp smokes do not use cannabis flower with significant ∆9-THC content, they will not get you high like smoking a joint.

If you’d like a change from smoking tobacco, MOUNTAIN Smokes might be a great nicotine and tobacco-free option to try!

When ingesting CBD oils, tinctures, edibles, and lotions – huge amounts of the compound are not absorbed by the body. Inhaling CBD vapor in the form of hemp smokes enables CBD to be more readily absorbed by the body.

Compared to ingesting CBD, which can take longer than an hour to take effect, the effects of smoking CBD-rich hemp can be felt within seconds.

It is incredibly important that you use reputable vendors for your hemp smokes, otherwise you may not be getting the amount of CBD advertised. MOUNTAIN Smokes utilizes a world-class, independent laboratory to test our hemp smokes to ensure you are getting the amount of CBD that you expect in every pack and every smoke.

All MOUNTAIN Smokes flavors and strengths contain less than 0.3% ∆9-THC. If you smoke heavily, you may accumulate enough THC in your body to fail a sensitive drug test. Always use caution when choosing CBD hemp products, especially smokes, and only use reputable vendors that have their Certificates of Analysis (COAs) on display or readily available. You can view our COAs by clicking here.

MOUNTAIN Smokes

Each Hemp CBD smoke is rolled with a proprietary blend of premium hemp flower, mullein & sage. The addition of sage and mullein is meant to provide a more flavorful, smooth smoke and help the smokes burn a little quicker (more like a cigarette and less like a pre-roll or joint).

All of our ingredients are procured from farm partners committed to organic, sustainable farming practices. We hand pick what we use from each batch, sometimes using only 10% of what is available, to ensure we have the most consistently great-tasting product on the market.

MOUNTAIN Smokes partners with hemp farmers who grow hemp organically and sustainably for maximum terpene content and premium quality. These family farms are based in Oregon, Washington, California, and Colorado.

All of our farming partners are long-term relationships, and we are committed to supporting family farms that grow their products in accordance with our core values of sustainability, transparency, and treating or Earth well.

 Where We Get Our Hemp

Each season, we visit our farm partners in-person to hand-pick only the best of each of their crops. We look for maximum terpene content and high amounts of CBD and CBG. This is top-shelf bud – we aren’t trying to mimic the taste or smell of tobacco by using overly processed, ruined hemp.

Where We Get Our Sage and Mullein

It is extremely important to us that we only partner with sustainable farms for the sage and mullein used in our smokes. White sage, Salvia apiana, is on the “To Watch” list of the United Plant Savers, because it is harvested out of its natural habitat. Our partner farms grow their own white sage so we are not further stressing the wild population.

Sage (Salvia aping) is an herb in the mint family with a wide array of uses, originally native to the Mediterranean region. This herb has been used throughout history in cooking and support good health across the world. In fact, the “officinalis” is derived from the word “offiicina,” or the area in monasteries where medicinal herbs were stored.

Uses of Sage

Although garden sage (Salvia officinalis) is most often used in cooking, white sage is used as a tea and also in the ritual known as smudging. Smudging is a highly sacred ritual of Indigenous peoples that must be treated with the utmost respect, and is often called smoke cleansing by non-Indigenous people.

Why We Use Sage in our CBD Hemp Smokes

Sage has a very unique flavor that complements our terpene-rich hemp very well. It adds balance, smoothness, and flavor to the smokes for that one-of-a-kind finish.

Mullein leaf (Verbascum thapsus) is an herb in the figwort family used for centuries for wellness purposes, originally made popular by Greek physician Dioscorides. It’s an extremely hardy plant, often appearing among the first vegetation to re-grow after forest fires.

Uses of Mullein

Mullein has an incredibly rich and varied history of uses, ranging from shoe-linings for insulation to torches to folk medicine, and its namesake “cowboy toilet paper” – though, we don’t recommend that.

Why We Use Mullein in our CBD Hemp Smokes

Like sage, mullein has been used as an herbal addition to cannabis and hemp joints by pioneers of the cannabis movement, and an even richer history of being smoked all across the world. It has a very light, neutral, and smooth flavor, and allows a more uniform distribution of the ingredients in our smokes.

We do not use chemical sprays to flavor our smokes, unlike many other hemp CBD smoke brands. Instead, we use all-natural terpenes (the compounds generated in plants to give their flavor and scents) in squeeze capsules located in the filters of each smoke.

The capsules are little balls of liquid terpenes – if you squeeze the filter between your fingers you can feel it pop! That’s how you know you’ve properly activated the flavor capsules.

No. We utilize a machine-rolling technique that is most similar to a cigarette (but unlike cigarettes we do not contain tobacco or the deadly chemical nicotine).

The cigarette format allows you to get CBD from each hemp smoke in the most convenient, bioavailable, and discrete way possible.

The term pre-roll is meant to describe what are commonly referred to as “joints.” Joints smoke slowly and are very harsh on the throat.

The MOUNTAIN Smokes blend is only made with high-quality, terpene-rich, full flavor hemp flower. The thing about this great CBD bud is that the better the flower, the more CBD and terpenes it contains. All in all, MOUNTAIN Smokes offers the smoothest way to smoke hemp flower while getting the most CBD.

Hemp pre-rolls may sometimes contain more CBD, but they smoke very slowly and are often hard on your throat. By the time you halfway finish a joint or pre-roll, you could have already gotten up to 70mg of CBD from our MOUNTAIN Smokes CBD Hemp Smokes without the coughing and without needing to put-out and relight a pre-roll later.

It’s perfectly normal to see spots on your hemp smokes! It is simply a result of the natural oils of the plant getting absorbed by the paper, and does not mean that your smokes are old or have otherwise spoiled.

The flavor in our Pineapple Squeeze and Mint Squeeze Hemp CBD smokes comes from a capsule in the filter of the smokes. Make sure you give the filter a squeeze before you light up! If the capsule is successfully popped, you will be able to smell the terpenes in the filter even before you take a drag.

MOUNTAIN Smokes have 70mg and 50mg variations. The amount of CBD is displayed prominently on each package to make choosing the right strength easy for you.

NO. Absolutely ZERO tobacco and ZERO nicotine. Period. Full stop.

MOUNTAIN makes no apologies for using terpene-rich, high quality hemp flower in all of our smokes. We do not mimic the taste and smell of tobacco. As a result, the Original 35mg and 70mg in addition to the ZEROs have a very apparent cannabis scent, while the Pineapple Squeeze and Mint Squeeze flavors are less noticeable due to the strong flavor and scent of the all-natural terpenes contained within the squeeze capsule in each filter.

At the end of the day, we do not want our smokes to mimic cigarettes. When one of your friends smells like good weed, your first question might be “Are you sharing?” If your friend smells like cigarettes, you’re probably going to ask “Would you mind leaving your coat by the door?” instead.

Our smokes are meticulously designed to offer a full-body, smooth, flavorful smoke that tastes like quality cannabis flower complemented with the unique flavors of sage and mullein. It’s a one-of-a-kind flavor suited for a relaxing ritual anytime, anywhere.

It’s incredibly important to us that we only use this top-shelf CBD bud. We want to deliver you a product that we enjoy, and there is nothing tasty about trying to mimic tobacco. It’s easy to enjoy the taste of a hemp smoke – when was the last time you ever met someone that enjoyed the taste of bad flower, or even worse, a cigarette?
